Container Haulage: FAQs
What Is Container Haulage?
Container haulage is the road move of a shipping container between a port and the place it is unpacked or loaded. For imports, that means collecting the full box from the terminal, delivering it to your site and returning the empty to the shipping line depot.
Simple exports work the other way: an empty box is delivered for packing, then taken back to the port in time for the vessel.
Good planning is what you are paying for. A reliable haulier books the terminal slot, checks the release and keeps you updated. As a result, the box does not sit at the port running up charges.
What Are Typical Container Haulage Rates?
Rates depend on the port, the delivery postcode, the box size and weight, and any special equipment. A standard 40ft from Felixstowe to the Midlands is priced differently from a side‑loader delivery into London, for example.
Lower invoices also come from sharing details early. Extra charges usually come from waiting time at the port or on site, weekend or night slots, or a container that needs a gen‑set.
Honest quotes include those items up front. Send us the details of your next box and we will come back with a clear, fixed price. Above all, you will know the full price before the truck sets off.
What Documents Do You Need Before Collecting a Container?
The container number, shipping line, port and the release or PIN details are needed once the box has cleared. Delivery details matter too: the site address, contact name, opening times and whether there is a forklift or loading bay.
Smooth exports also need the booking reference, the empty release and the port cut‑off for the vessel.
Quicker slots follow early details, because we can book as soon as one is available. If anything is missing, our traffic desk will tell you exactly what to ask the shipping line or your forwarder for. For example, a forwarder can usually send the release details straight to us, which saves you a step.
How Do You Avoid Demurrage and Storage Charges?
Planning the collection inside the free time is the best protection. Free time is the number of days a shipping line or terminal allows before demurrage or storage charges start. We check the release, book the earliest suitable slot and update you if the terminal is congested.
Lower detention charges come from returning the empty promptly, so we agree the unpacking time with your site and book the return.
Simple to set up: tell us your free‑time dates when you enquire, and we will plan the whole job around them. As a result, you have the best chance of paying no extra port or detention charges at all.
Can You Move 20ft, 40ft and High Cube Containers?
Yes. We move 20ft and 40ft standard containers, 40ft high cubes and refrigerated containers. Heavy 20ft boxes need a trailer and axle set‑up that suits the weight. So please give us the gross weight from the shipping documents when you book.
Careful routing matters for high cubes, which are about 30cm taller than standard boxes. Low bridges and some delivery sites need checking first.
Easy fix: mention any height limits or tight access at your site, and our planners will choose the right trailer and route. In addition, we will tell you if a side‑loader or a different trailer would make the delivery easier.
What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?
You hear about it from us straight away, with a plan to fix it. Ports get congested, slots get moved and vessels arrive late. What matters is that you are told early, so you can warn your customer or change plans on site.
Experienced people staff the traffic desk, including some who have worked for shipping lines and forwarders, so they know what you need to hear.
Round‑the‑clock support means there is always someone to call. Our proudest Google review mentions exactly this: help on the complicated scenarios. Because problems are shared early, you can make decisions while there is still time to act.
